CLU Boasts All-Americans, West Rookie of the Year

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Several Cal Lutheran volleyball team members earned multiple postseason accolades for their athletic performances during the 2009 season. This group of Regals is highlighted by junior Erin Exline who earned third team All-American status, announced earlier today.

Exline, a junior middle blocker earned her first American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) all-American selection along with first team all-West region and first team all-SCIAC in 2009. She ranked second in the SCIAC with a .285 hitting percentage and was also named to the NCAA West region all-Tournament team and chosen as SCIAC Female Athlete of the Week earlier in the year.

Freshman setter Jackie Russell made a lasting impression in only her first season earning honorable mention all-American honors. Russell was named all-West region and all-SCIAC Freshman of the Year to go along with a first team all-conference selection.

She became only the second setter in CLU history with over 1,000 assists finishing her rookie campaign with 1,144. Russell was the conference leader in assists and ranked sixth with 37 service aces.

Junior Allison Kerr was named all-West region honorable mention after leading the SCIAC as the only player to hit over .300 this season. She also ranked top-10 in the conference averaging .75 blocks per game.

Five CLU players in total earn postseason honors as outside hitters senior Cori Hayes and freshman Rachel Smith were named to the first team all-SCIAC along with Exline and Russell. Kerr was named second team all-conference for the fifth and final Regals selection.

Cal Lutheran finished the season 21-12 and in the West region semifinal of the NCAA tournament. It was the program's 10th trip to the NCAA postseason, fourth in the past five years and third straight earning at least one victory.
